The Mean World Syndrome: Media Violence & the Cultivation of Fear
A new film based on the late George Gerbner's groundbreaking analysis of media influence & media violence
For years, debates have raged among scholars, politicians, and concerned parents about the effects of media violence on viewers. Too often these debates have fallen into simplistic battles between those who claim that media images directly cause violence and those who argue that activists exaggerate the impact of media exposure. Based on interviews conducted with George Gerbner before his death in 2005, this brand new film urges us to think about media effects in more nuanced ways. The National Entertainment State
Illustrative handout on media consolidation and ownership
Where do Americans get their news and who controls what they consume? Ten years ago, when The Nation magazine first charted a map of the National Entertainment State, four colossal conglomerates spread across the media landscape. Today, that map has significantly changed because of the rise of new media and a vigorous reform movement, but the old corporate giants still hold most of the cards. Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft are quickly rising, but are not included in this 2006 chart because they do not own -- not yet, anyway -- the major television networks, which remain Americans' #1 source of news.
